What PKB Civils offers

PKB Civils are growing. Off the back of strong business performance and several significant new contract wins, we’re looking for experienced Working Gangers to join our teams on a range of civil engineering and groundworks projects nationwide.

This is a hands-on role. You’ll be leading a small gang on site whilst working alongside them every day  organising the work, keeping things moving, and setting the standard.

We offer both CIS and PAYE – whichever suits you, we can make it work.

CIS (self-employed)

• Transport provided to and from site from Rochdale
• Potential for van and fuel card
• Workwear, tools and PPE all provided

PAYE (employed)

• Competitive salary with potential van and fuel card
• Transport provided to and from site from Rochdale
• 28 days holiday including bank holidays
• An extra day’s holiday for every year with the business, up to 3 additional days
• An extra day’s holiday for every 50 nights worked away

Working away – CIS and PAYE

• 1 hour’s bonus pay for each night away
• Any hours after 4.30pm paid at time and a quarter
• Premier Inn double room provided
• £25 evening meal allowance
• Hotel breakfast included

The role

You’ll take day-to-day responsibility for a gang of groundworkers on site, making sure work is delivered safely, efficiently and to the right standard. Alongside your leadership responsibilities you’ll be working on the tools, covering:

• Concrete breakout, subbase preparation and pouring new external slabs
• Concrete finishing works
• Shuttering and formwork for slabs and structures
• Steel fixing
• Setting and checking levels using a rotating laser
• Operating excavators, dumpers and rollers
• Drainage works including separators and attenuation tanks’
• Ducting installation
• Finishing works — kerbing, edgings and flagging
• Tarmac works
• CAT scanning and working safely around live services
• Reading and understanding job packs, drawings and phasing plans.
• Managing project management software daily and updating a site diary with photos, deliveries etc.
• Ordering call off materials to site.
• Delivering tool box talks to the site team.
• Reporting back to the project manager daily.

What we need from you

• Proven experience as a Working Ganger or Senior Groundworker ready to step up
• A number of years in groundworks — you need to have done it to lead it
• The ability to organise a gang, read a job, and keep work on track without constant direction from above
• Strong communication — with your team, with site management, and with the client
• Willingness to work nationwide and away from home when required
• A 7.30am site start — yard meet times can be earlier depending on distance
• Valid CSCS card — Supervisor card preferred
• Full driving licence preferred
